Lt. Governor Matt Denn

Lt. Governor Denn in Kent and New Castle County on Thursday, October 13

For Immediate Release: October 12, 2011

DOVER, Del. (Wednesday, October 12, 2011) – On Thursday, October 13, 2011, Lt. Governor Matt Denn will spend the day in Kent and New Castle County.

The Lt. Governor’s first stop is to recognize and swear in 100 new AmeriCorps volunteers for Delaware at a ceremony in Legislative Hall. The volunteers will serve at various Delaware agencies and nonprofit during 2011-2012, including the state Department of Economic Development Office, Habitat for Humanity, YMCA Emergency Services Corps, the Ministry of Caring, Public Allies and AmeriCorps Vista. In exchange for a year of service in Delaware (1,700 hours), members 17 and older receive:

Valuable work experience in their chosen field.
$5,350 to pay for college, graduate school or to pay back student loans.
Health coverage and loan deferment while in service.
In some cases, a living allowance of a minimum of $12,100.
The opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and travel.

AmeriCorps was created in 1994 under President Bill Clinton. Working through service commissions in each state, it matches a member’s interest to the area in which they would like to volunteer, meeting critical community needs in social services, the environment, emergency preparedness and education. Each year, more than 85,000 people join AmeriCorps, with more than 500,000 members serving 1994.

Lt. Governor Matt Denn then delivers remarks to recognize National Archives Month at the Public Archives in Dover. He will talk about the importance of archives, the technological progress – including significant use of social media – being used in Delaware, collaboration and the ease of readily available online information in a single location.

He will then speak at the 55th Annual Convention of the Delaware Retired School Personnel Association.

Finally, Lt. Governor Denn will deliver remarks at the Annual Awards Luncheon of the Governor’s Committee on the Employment of People With Disabilities. This luncheon honors employees with disabilities in the State of Delaware who are exceptional role models for their peers, and employers who have shown dedication and commitment to the practice of recruiting,
